Effect of ideal charging algorithm for electric vehicles in decreasing peak load demand in customer site

Abstract


With solemn anxiety on global warming as well as a vow towards reducing fossil-based energy consumption in transportation sector Electric Vehicles (EV) has been given extra priorities around the world among the other zero emission technologies. EVs can be an alternative source of power for the distributed loads in corporate or public buildings (which is the main reason for excessive power consumption) while parked. But the increasing trend of using electric vehicles will significantly affect the demand for electricity on the power system. Again, inept charging system of EVs will risk the stability and safety of power system which can cost a lot. In order to reduce the adverse effect on power system (especially in consumer premise) during charging of electric vehicles, an ideal charging algorithm has been proposed in this paper. Analysis has also been done in modeling and developing of economic and high accuracy smart socket outlet to minimize the charging effect on the grid. The proposed algorithm is established on chronological demand data, surviving charge on battery and necessities of the user. Therefore the main purpose of this research is to present an algorithm for a smart charging system for electric vehicles and analyze its impact in reducing the peak demand for electricity by controlling the electric power output in the charging socket.
